Notice of Open Forum for San Antonio Community Tennis Players
Message from the President San Antonio Tennis Association

As President of the San Antonio Tennis Association, it is not only my goal, but also my passion, to facilitate the growth and development of SATA as we continue to evolve into an organization that most effectively and efficiently serves the needs of the entire San Antonio tennis community.

It is our mission to promote and grow the game of tennis in our city and provide the most comprehensive tennis experience for all.   To this end we are looking for feedback from the tennis community for the purpose of most effectively positioning our organization to reach its full potential and best provide for all tennis players in San Antonio.

This meeting will be an open forum for the tennis players in our community to provide their suggestions, concerns and constructive input.  We welcome and value all input from members of our tennis community.

The open forum will be held Tuesday, May 24th from 7 PM – 9 PM at McFarlin Tennis Center.  I will begin the evening with an explanation of what the SATA Board has voted to do and why we reached these decisions.  Then those present who have signed up to speak will be called upon and may speak for a maximum of five minutes in order that we may hear from as many players as possible.  A sheet will be available at the meeting to sign up for those who wish to speak.

I look forward to hearing your constructive input on how we may best serve you.

Please join us and have your voice heard.

Warm Regards,
Margaret Canby

  1. The ideas for the Fall are a reflection of the new staff and reduce revenue to the organization. Makes no sense at all to play 40+. I say out with the entire staff and start new.

  2. Response to 7:37-They could always raise the league fees. These fees include dues for our SATA memberships.

  3. Since USTA is dropping all leagues below 50, it appears there is little interest in the players who have supported & played the game of "life" up and until now. We all understand the need to support younger players, but the players above 50 are the financial backers & supporters of the game. USTA is placing 90% of players over the age of 60 in "no man's land" on the courts & they really don't care. By not having level age leagues, those over 50 will have to play in leagues of the young guys and in tournaments where the "retired" pros play with only age level. It is great to play against the 65 year old who plays nationals and rated a 4.5, creaming you 0 & 0 when you are a 3.5-4.0 who played high school tennis & social tennis for 40 years.

  4. The adult programs have always funded the juniors. It appears they are taking their "financial backers" for granted. Tennis is one of only few sports that can be played for a lifetime. I guess they do not realize people are living longer these days.

  5. Response to "dropping all leagues below 50". Where did you get this? The USTA in 2013 is actually changing the age groups. Instead of seniors (50+), super senior (60+) and super seniors plus (70+), the will have masters (40+), seniors (55+) and possibly super seniors (65 or 70+). These leagues will be levels as well as age (so 55+ yrs levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 etc.).

  6. Wish we would've been informed of the agenda prior to the meeting. When we will know what the decision are that were made?

  7. The decisions were made a long time ago (2007). SATA will only give you information that they want you to have. The public forum was a way to make you think you have a voice. Your interests are not theirs and they refused to answer for their actions. Pissed people off by their refusal to debate.

  8. USTA will have only 55+ leagues starting next year except Dallas will start this year. That means if you are older than 55 you will play down. Texas USTA has said they might have Super Senior+ if "they" see they need it. Again let's be real, do you think the majority of the players in the 60-65-70s want to play 55 year olds. Why do you think they established age levels, so the playing field would be level. Tournaments at age level have always been unlevel with the retired teaching pros & xcollege players at 4.5 playing there. Look at the tournaments, you don't see 65-70 year olds playing down in the 55 flights just for the heck of it and certainly not in the 4.0 flights. Again USTA does not look at the big picture just as they did when the bumped thousands of players up to 4.0 with the believe it would level out the playing field. You begin to think USTA is made up of golfers/ice hockey players not tennis thinking people.

  9. The USTA is made up of politicians, bankers and lawyers. Their mission is to make money. They want to create more future tennis players with open wallets. Grow the game, fatten the bank account. This is why they pour so much money into junior programs because the old farts have less time ahead of them on the court. Pro tennis has not been the cash cow for them so they have reduced their investment in it. Now we face a pro tennis drought in the near future.
