The playoffs are underway. Feel free to comment on your early predictions regarding which teams will advance to sectionals. Are there any standout players that teams need to watch out for?
Blossom Smash should win men's 4.0, then have half their team bumped to 4.5 again, and then go recruit more 4.5 players self-rated as 4.0 for the fall league.
I think the top 2 teams get a bye and then names are drawn out of a hat for everyone else. That is what I heard. That gives no incentive for teams ranked 3-6 to to fight at the end of the season for the best spot if al they need is to finish 6 or above.
I think Shadow Cliff Spartans have a good chance to win. They added a strong player at the end of the season who has had success in open dubs and is winning in 4.5. This player also beat Ralph from Sonterra Select who was undefeated this season. Probably should have never self rated a 4.0.
Drawing names out of a hat is stupid. Teams 3-6 should be fighting for the best spot in the draw. Really does not matter once they clinch a top 6 spot.
The reason they draw for positions is due to a bad interpretation of the rules. For tournaments, you place seeds 1 and 2, and then draw for placement of 3 and 4, and then draw for seeds 5-8, etc. The reason is to prevent manipulating the draw by setting seeds to avoid semifinal matchups. For instance, if #2 and #3 were always on the same side of the draw, and Serena was #2, then they might make Venus #4 instead of #3 so they wouldn't meet until the finals. With random drawing, this is prevented. (By the way, this problem is pretty much eliminated since they now do seeds almost strictly by rankings.)
So by calling the playoffs a tournament, they follow these rules. But the playoffs are not a "tournament" they are PLAYOFFS and since seeding cannot be manipulated by the person doing the draw deciding who gets what seed, following the random rule is not required, and in fact is unfair as you could have 3 of the top 4 teams on the same side of the draw (as in fact the 4.0 playoffs do).
A person everyone needs to watch out for is Mark Grove from Team Newks! He is always supporting his team with a beer in his hand. It never runs out either. WOW!!
Both Blossom and Spartans have really strong teams. Since they are both on the same side of the draw, it should be a fun match for everyone to come out and watch. As to who will win that match up? Coin toss as of now, both are really strong. Who do you think will win??
It is looking more like SC Spartans are not a pleasant team to play against. There seems to be drama following Jose Fernandez and Ronnie Valle or maybe they are the DRAMA!! Midol could help em??
Maybe Blossom should hold off until the scores are entered since they do not have a confirmed winner from the shadow cliff match. If no team claims the victory, blossom moves on to the final by default.
Can we get comments from the players who were in the dispute. What the hell happened? Did they default due to the disagreement. Did Jeff feel threatened? ()
Newks did have a secret weapon, Shadow Cliff's major choking ability. Shadow Cliff probably had the best 4.0 singles player in the state but could not build around the guaranteed singles line. Sad.
I told you we had a secret weapon... no one player makes a team. It's team spirit and hard work, and fair play that paid off. Newks wins the finals 4-1 against SC Spartans ....... Wow! Thanks to the most unselfish bunch of player's I have ever captained. I love you guys. - Mark Grove Newks 4.0 Captain
Our secret weapon were our support team. We had teammates, spouses, girlfriends, sons, daughters, and friends from other teams we had befriended during the season, all there cheering us on through the heat!! WHAT A GREAT TEAM WIN!! Thank you everyone for your support.
When do the 4.0 mens Spring playoff draws get posted ?
ReplyDeleteHow do they dertermine who plays who ?

ReplyDeleteEarly upset prediction. Oak Hills wins all three lines of doubles to defeat Shadow Cliff.
ReplyDeleteNo scores yet for Shadow Cliff/Oak Hills match. Wonder what the hold up is? Maybe it has something to do with the drama at line 2 dubs.

ReplyDeleteMaybe noone on the Spartans know how to put in the scores?? Maybe someone should ask them tomorrow if they need help with this process.
