Controversial end to this years 40+ League Men's 4.0 League

Unfortunately, the 40+ League ended on a sour note when COOL DADDIES had to default a line against SONTERRA SELECT during the final match of their playoff. It is my understanding that COOL DADDIES had a player who went to the wrong site and was 2 minutes from arriving at the correct site when the default took place. From what I hear, the league coordinator present at the event, asked the captain of Sonterra Select to be understanding and allow the match to be played. Even if the player was a little late. Sonterra's captain would not allow it and demanded the default in accordance with the rules.

Now, there is no way to know if the strongest 4.0 team will actually represent San Antonio at sectionals. What do you think about what took place in this unofficiated playoff match? Was the Sonterra captain correct to demand a default even when the league coordinator suggests that the match should be played. I know many captains like to settle matches on the court and are lenient when a opponent is running a little late. In this situation, he just went to the wrong site. Do you agree with the default? If you were in the Sonterra captain's shoes would you have been a gentleman and let the match be play out? I already know COOL DADDIES captain would have wanted to play the match if the situation were reversed.

Please respond with your comments. It will be interesting to see what fellow tennis players have to say. Also, if you have anymore information about what happened and would like to share, please do.

  1. I was told by other team captains that Shawn was not a nice guy and would take a win anyway he could. I, unfortunately, found out the hard way.

We really need to re-think why we play tennis and if fun, exercise and enjoying the game are not at the top of your list, play tournaments and go ruthless!!! League is for FUN and teamwork. Beers are optional.

    1. Thank goodness the majority of captains don't operate this way. I've done the job for 15 years and would have been demonstrably annoyed to have someone utter, "The best be damned, I want to WIN!"

God bless those that aspire for fun of the game not the banality of this captain that is in the minority. I cannot apologise for others so all I can offer is empathy.

    2. These Blogs are a joke and always untrue trying to Slander others for jealous reasons. The best team won the season and the playoffs in the case mentioned above. Cool Daddies lost to Sonterra Select THREE TIMES that season! And, their player wasn't even at the courts 20 minutes past start time. IT'S THE FINALS! The rules are clear and their captain gave him an extra five minutes as a courtesy. The REAL issue is there shouldn't even have been a two team playoff/final since they had to play each other twice during the regular season (one the weekend just before the Final) in which Sonterra won BOTH. All this stupid format does is allow Captains like Armando to "Hide" his ringer (Tony) during the regular season until the playoff/finals. Tony played his min. two matches to qualify(one doubles and a questionable make-up Singles match). Lastly, they still had a chance to win even with a default. Two out of three lines were still played and you can all guess who lost - Armando! Maybe he should have left himself out of the lineup and made sure his players arrived early to warm up like every team in a Final does... Lies, lies, lies. Check your facts people.

  2. I understand that rules are rules and that Sontera had every right to invoke the default rule, but why not allow some flexibility in the rule and allow for the final results to be determined on the court rather than through default? It is not as though the Sontera captain was being asked to re-schedule the match for another day. As SA ACE stated, "Now there is no way to know if the strongest 4.0 team will actually represent San Antonio at sectionals."

  3. Rules are rules but even in tournaments, the officials will be lax on the rules. Extra time on changeovers during hot weather is not uncommon. Players who compete in singles and doubles are often given more time to get lunch between matches than the rest period the rules state. This seems fair if your next opponent had plenty of time to catch a meal because they had more time between matches. The officials are using their judgement to create a positive experience for the players.

I know this situation is a little different. If you say "rules are rules" then I have shown you a few exceptions made by officials. This conclusion, while legal, is unfortunate. A gentleman would have let the match be decieded on the court in this situation.

  4. Who was actually going to play the match from Sonterra that was defaulted? Seems like they could have protested against their captain and played the match. It is the players choice I think.

  5. This is unfortunate and distasteful. First and foremost the final decision should hve been made by the league representative. Secondly team captains don't make this your own personal agenda. Thirdly negative personal statements serve no purpose. In conclusion this match should hve been played let's decide this on the court. I'm sure no player wants to win nder this circumstance by default. LOrtega

  7. Everyone in San AntonioSunday, February 05, 2012

In response to the above captain......Are the blogs "always" untrue or are you just not "always" right? According to this guys statement, even information he contributed would be considered "untrue". That's something I can really believe. It is not the best way to try to convince people to believe your side of a story when you announce everything written here is "untrue." It's like trying to convince children that there is no Santa and his elves right before you tell them to expect a Christmas present from Santa on Christmas morning. I hope this guy was not on Santa's naughty list.

"Check your facts people. " Why would you need to hide a computer rated player? Tony had a "C" rating. He was not hidden from anyone who knows how to use tennislink. It would not even matter if you tried to hide him with a 3.5 player in doubles, like someone else I know. Check your facts and stop making excuses.

  8. There should be no crying in tennis! This is 4.0 tennis that people are crying about. Give me a break. Mr. Reed has stated San Antonio has more complaints than any other city in Texas. Houston and Dallas also seem to take control with more talent when it is all said and done at sectionals.

  9. We lose at sectionals because we have 1 team advancing to sectionals. Those other cities have wildcards that give them an advantage. These large cities are given preference over San Antonio when they already have an advantage by having a larger talent pool. San Antonio does well in other leagues at sectionals where there are no wildcards. The wildcards dominated 4.0 sectionals last year. Wildcard teams really allow you to hide players.

Poor leadership is probably the reason Texas section gets so many complaints on San Antonio. Look at the confusion we have had.
